Main information about Ambien

Ambien has a moderate hypnotic action and is used for the treatment of insomnia and a restoration of sleep. Ambien has Zolpidem ingredient.

According to its efficiency, it is not worse that benzodiazepines but it is better tolerated and does not cause many side effects.

The active ingredients of Ambien are quickly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract, and a human experiences light sleepiness in 20-25 minutes after the use of a one-time dose.

An elimination half-life of the active ingredients of Ambien is also short (about 2 hours).

Ambien is a drug of the narrow action. Its main task consists in the improvement of the sleep quality. Using the drug shortens a period of falling asleep and a number of the night awakenings grows down.

Ambien may be used by people with situational or chronic insomnia and unstable working schedule, during moving to another time zone, and others.

Ambien is characterized by the central myorelaxing and anti-convulsive effects (but weaker than in benzodiazepines).

Administration and dosage of Ambien

As Ambien acts quickly, it is used 30-40 minutes before sleeping. It is better to take a pill of Ambien and go to bed in 10-15 minutes. During the complete relaxation and turned off light, the drug acts faster.

Patients at the age of 18 to 65 should begin the insomnia treatment from the minimal dose of Ambien 10 mg. This dose is enough for most people in order to improve the quality of sleep.

In rare cases, Ambien 10 mg turns out ineffective and a dose is increased up to 15-20 mg per day. The maximal daily dose of Ambien is 20 mg.

The use of higher doses may cause severe side effects. Senior patients (over 65) should take not more than 5 mg of Ambien per day.

A general length of the continuous use of Ambien should not exceed 28 days. A longer use of the drug may cause a development of the tolerance, and a medical addiction may occur during the increased dose.

Recommendations for the use

  • Alcohol and other products inhibiting the central nervous system significantly increase a hypnotic effect of Ambien, and it may cause dangerous complications. If you are taking Ambien, refuse from other drugs of the sedative action and alcohol
  • Patients under 18 years old and pregnant women are not recommended to use Ambien
  • The symptoms of the night apnea or respiratory distress may grow due to the use of Ambien. If you have issues with a respiratory center (its low function), refuse from the use of Ambien
  • As Ambien does not cause a daily sleepiness, it is still necessary to be careful during driving or doing potentially dangerous activity

Side effect

The side effect of Ambien depends on the daily dose. Using 10 mg of Ambien per day, the side effects are unlikely. In rare cases, the appearance of the muscle weakness, confusion, short-term dizziness may happen.

However, the use of Ambien 20 mg may increase the side effects (especially during the high sensitivity to Zolpidem): day-time sleepiness, headache, dry mouth, psychopathological reactions, disorder of the sexual desire, and skin rash.
