Description

Main information about Fosamax.

Fosamax is a corrector of metabolism in cartilaginous and bone tissue. It contains alendronic acid which stops a destruction of the bone tissue and prevents a formation of osteoporosis.

Fosamax regulates a metabolism in the bone and cartilaginous tissues and stimulates osteogenesis. Due to the treatment, an intensive growth of the mineral bone density is observed, bone fragility is reduced, and painful sensations in bones is decreased.

Fosamax is often prescribed women to prevent and treat osteoporosis during postmenopause. But it may be effective even during the destruction of the bone tissue after the consumption of the hormonal drugs (glucocorticosteroids) and Paget disease.

In 2-3 hours a concentration of alendronic acid achieves maximum in the blood plasma and the action of the drug is started. But a medical result may be estimated in 3 months of the treatment.

Fosamax does not have a function of the recovery of the bone tissue. It just changes some physiological processes when metabolism of calcium is increased to enhance a mineral bone density.

Administration and dosage of Fosamax

It is better to take Fosamax in the morning, after awakening for better digestion.

The pills should be used before eating or in 2 hours after meals, with a glass of clear water.

Do not take the medicine with juice, soda or milk because it may lower the uptake of alendronic acid in the stomach.

To treat osteoporosis in women during menopause, Fosamax is used in the dose of 70 mg once per week. To prevent osteoporosis during the use of glucocorticosteroids, it is recommended to take ½ of the pills of Fosamax 70 mg per day within 4-6 months.

To treat Paget disease, it is recommended to take 2 pills of Fosamax 70 mg once per day within 4 months. The treatment may last for 2 months more if an evident effect is absent after 2-month-course.

Recommendations for the use

  • It is not recommended to lay down and eat within 30 minutes after the use of Fosamax. A neglect of this rule may cause an irritation of esophagus. Do not take the drug before sleeping
  • As a building material to improve the bone tissue, it is recommended to take enough calcium, and vitamin D. in case of deficit of calcium, the use of Fosamax is contraindicated because the level of calcium will drop during the treatment
  • Do not use Fosamax during diseases of esophagus and intestine

A simultaneous use of Fosamax with estrogens and progestin in women during menopause and climacterical period leads to the increase of the pharmacological action of alendronic acid
