Main information about Imitrex
Imitrex may reduce a severe headache and stop the migraine attack. It contains Sumatriptan which is regarded as a standard medicine for migraine.
It is almost impossible to foresee the migraine attack, so it is pointless to take Imitrex for the prophylaxis. It works only during the appeared signs of the migraine and in the blood vessels of the brain.
One of the main causes of migraine is an edema of the blood vessels in the brain.
Imitrex regulates the tone of the blood vessels in the brain during the attack of migraine, provides a vasoconstrictor action and reduces their edema.
Imitrex may reduce a period of aura during migraine but it hardly inhibits nausea and vomiting. However, vomiting is almost absent due to the fast and intense narrowing of the blood vessels. Imitrex begins working in 15 minutes after the oral use.
It may be used on any stage of the migraine attack but it is better to take the drug during the first signs of the migraine appearance.
The maximal effect is achieved on the peak of the attack, in an hour but due to the active narrowing of the blood vessels, this stage goes without evident headache. The drug action lasts for a short period – 203 hours but it is enough to reduce one of the migraine attacks.
Administration and dose of Imitrex
To reduce migraine attack, it is necessary to take a pill of Imitrex 50 mg. the effect may be felt in 20 minutes. Do not take another pill even if headache is not stopped in an hour. Another pill of Imitrex may be used only during the next attack, in 4 hours after the last use of the pill.
If Imitrex 50 mg does not help to remove a headache, you may have a low sensitivity to Sumatriptan and Imitrex 100 mg will help you. When you have a migraine attack next time, take a pill of Imitrex 100 mg.
The maximal daily dose of Imitrex is 300 mg.
