Main information about Prozac

Prozac has an antidepressive action. The drug contains Fluoxetine that inhibits a breaking of serotonin in the structures of the brain and increases a concentration of this neurotransmitter.

In spite of the common critics, Prozac is an almost irreplaceable antidepressant on the pharmaceutical market.

Million people take Prozac every day to treat bulimia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, anorexia nervosa, panic disorder, anxiety, and others.

The increase of serotonin in the structures of the brain leads to the change of the perspective of the external environment and current events.

A positive thinking grows, mood is improved, anxiety and concerns disappear. Using Prozac significantly improves a functioning of the central nervous system and restores a healthy sleep.

An antidepressive effect develops long. To notice changes, a patient will need at least 3 weeks. But when the maximal therapeutic effect is achieved, it will be kept within a long time even during the reduced daily dose.

Even after the therapy with Prozac, the drug action will last for at least 9 days, and then the concentration of Fluoxetine will drop in the blood.

Administration and dosage of Prozac

As the level of the therapy efficiency cannot be estimated at once, the treatment of any disorder begins with a minimal daily dose of Prozac 20 mg.

The pills are used once per day in the morning, before breakfast. In 2-3 weeks of a regular use of Prozac 20 mg, the dose may be gradually increased by 20 mg per week.

The maximal daily dose of Prozac is 80 mg. High doses should be divided into 2-3 parts and taken with the interval of 8 hours. When a stable antidepressive effect is achieved, the dose may be decreased because this will not affect the efficiency of the treatment.

The dose of Prozac for senior patients should not exceed 20 mg per day.

The treatment of severe depression should last for 5-6 months to achieve a stable therapeutic action. A chance of the addiction development is low, and that is why you do not bother about your health during the long-term treatment.

Recommendations for the use

  • As a development of the Prozac effect takes much time, it is necessary to control patients whose depression is severe and who are able to commit suicide at the beginning of the treatment. There is a chance that the depression symptoms may grow within the first 2 weeks, so that suicidal thoughts appear. A patient should be controlled during this period. When Prozac begins acting, any suicidal thoughts pass
  • Do not take Prozac if you are taking MAO inhibitors. The interaction of these medicines may lead to a serotonin syndrome. The interval between the use of these drugs should be for at least 14 days
  • Do not use Prozac if you are under 18 years old, have severe hepatic failure, acute state of the mania, or high level of glucose in the blood
  • This antidepressant is not recommended during pregnancy because it penetrates through placenta and increases a risk of the development of a cardiac anomaly in a baby

Side effect

A development of the suicidal thoughts within the first two weeks is not the only side effect of Prozac. During the treatment, the following side effects may happen: headache, dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, indigestion, sexual function disorders, and tremor.

Lower the dose of Prozac if the side effects grow.
