Description

Main information about Zanaflex.

Zanaflex

is a muscle relaxant of the central action. It provides an analgesic effect and antitonic action during the increased muscle tone. The drug contains Tizanidine.

According to the pharmacological characteristics,

Zanaflex is similar to other myorelaxants of the central action but the mechanism of the action differs. The action of Zanaflex consists in the reduced production of aminoacids that agitate the central nervous system.

It does not increase a sensitivity of the central nervous system to GABA, and therefore if a patient has a weak therapeutic effect of mydocalm or baclofen, they may take

Zanaflex.

Zanaflex is quickly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and begins its action. A time of the maximal concentration of Tizanidine is 1-2 hours in the blood, and so the muscle relaxation begins in an hour after the use of the drug. But in case of the evident painful syndrome, the action of

Zanaflex may not be felt within 1-3 days. The residual pains may be kept within a long time but their intensity is reduced after the complete relaxation of the muscle fibers.

Zanaflex may be used during different pathologies related to the excessive agitation of the central nervous system and increased muscle tone:

  • painful spasms of skeletal muscles
  • osteochondrosis
  • herniated disc
  • osteoarthritis
  • bruises and muscle injuries
  • skeletal muscle pain during multiple sclerosis, degenerative diseases of the spinal cord, cerebral palsy

Administration and dose of

Zanaflex

Zanaflex is produced in pills for the oral use. Food does not influence on the pharmacological features of the drug, and therefore the pills may be used before, during and after meals.

To remove painfulness of the muscle spasms,

Zanaflex is used in the dose of 2-4 mg up to 3 times per day. If an attack/spasm of the muscle occurred at night, it is allowed to take another dose of

Zanaflex 2 mg. In case of the increased tone of the muscles due to the neurological disorders,

Zanaflex is used in the dose of 2 mg 3 times per day. Depending on the degree of the therapeutic effect, the dose is gradually increased by 2-4 mg once in 4-5 days.

If neurological disorders, it is allowed to use a daily dose of

Zanaflex up to 24 mg (6 mg of

Zanaflex 4 times per day).

A length of the course of the treatment is individual and varies depending on the health of a patient, and it usually takes about a month.

Recommendations for the use

  • if renal or hepatic failure, the use of Zanaflex is not recommended
  • patients under 18 years old should not take Zanaflex to relax the muscle tissues
  • if you are taking Ciprofloxacin, it is necessary to stop taking it, or refuse from using Zanaflex. These medicines are incompatible
  • if you are taking hypotensive drugs including diuretics, Zanaflex may enhance their action, so that a load to the cardiovascular system is made, and bradycardia/hypotension may appear

Side effect

Using

Zanaflex patients often experience drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, a slight decrease in blood pressure. The higher the dose of

Zanaflex is, the more evident the side effects are. Therefore, it is necessary to control a general state during the increase of the dose, and if the side effects become stronger, a daily dose should be stopped.
